Turn your Legal Residency in Portugal or Spain into an EU Passport.
If you hold legal residency in Portugal (whether through the D7 Visa, D8 Digital Nomad Visa, Golden Visa, Student or Work permits) or in Spain, we assess whether you can now take the step toward European Citizenship.
Key Legal Highlights (Article 6)
What you need to know before filing
- 7 or 10 years of residence (Portugal): Since 19 May 2026 (Organic Law No. 1/2026), naturalization by residence generally requires at least 7 years of legal residence in Portugal for nationals of countries whose official language is Portuguese and for European Union citizens, and 10 years for nationals of other countries. The rule applies to applications submitted from that date onwards. Cases that were already pending continue to be assessed under the previous law. We analyse your specific case, including how your residence periods are counted.
- How residence time is counted (Portugal): For applications submitted from 19/05/2026 onwards, the rule that counted residence time from the date of the residence permit application no longer exists. What counts is the time of legal residence held under a residence permit, adding up the periods within the limits set by law. We do the calculation based on your permits.
- Portuguese language and culture: The law now requires proof, by test or certificate, of knowledge of the Portuguese language and culture, of national history and symbols, and of the rights and duties and the political organisation of the State. Nationals of countries whose official language is Portuguese are still presumed to know the language, but are not released from the other knowledge requirements. The regulations for the test have not yet been published. We are following their publication and will prepare your case accordingly.
- Dual Citizenship Allowed: Portugal allows full dual nationality — you do not need to renounce your US, UK, Canadian, or Brazilian citizenship.
